Why people were talking about it

Poisoners of Wells and Crops
Examining Jewish Texts and Purity Laws
Jewish scripture does not endorse defiling or attacking non‑Jews with filth. In the Torah, human bodily emissions (urine, feces, etc.) render the person ceremonially impure, but there is no injunction to use such waste as a weapon against others. For example, Numbers 19 stipulates that one who enters a tent where someone has defecated becomes impure until evening【54†L52-L57】 – a self‑purity rule, not an order to harm outsiders. Similarly, Leviticus 15–16 treats discharges (including feces, menstrual blood, etc.) as sources of impurity for the individual, not as tools of aggression.
Rabbinic sources likewise never teach “dousing the goyim” (non‑Jews) in excrement as any ritual or practice. On the contrary, many purity laws emphasize avoiding dirt and waste: covering excrement and maintaining latrines away from holy spaces is repeatedly advised【47†L349-L358】【54†L52-L57】. Indeed, archaeological studies note that rabbinic Judaism did not regard ordinary feces as a ritual contaminant【54†L52-L57】. The one Talmudic discussion of excrementic “penalty” appears in Gittin 57a – but this is a description of divine punishment, not a prescribed act. In that story Onkelos raises the spirit of “Jesus” (Yeshu) who reports being punished in “boiling excrement” for mocking the Sages【51†L532-L539】. The text quotes: “Anyone who mocks the words of the Sages will be sentenced to boiling excrement”【51†L532-L539】. This is a statement about metaphysical judgment, not a literal instruction to pour feces on others.
Likewise, while the Talmud occasionally discusses non‑Jewish impurity laws, it never counsels Jews to defile or injure “goyim” in this way. In fact, some rabbinic rulings grant leniencies for gentiles (e.g. Jews need not observe Sabbath for converts, etc.), and impurity laws often treat gentiles differently. Christine Hayes notes that rabbinic sources even devised a rule making gentiles ritually impure “like a zav” (a leprous discharge) to deter intermarriage【11†L1334-L1342】. This purely legal category, however, is intended as a social boundary – it has nothing to do with sanctioned violence or fecal warfare. In short, no passage in the Talmud, Mishnah, or Biblical literature commands or praises throwing filth at non‑Jews. Such claims appear only in hostile misinterpretations or outright forgeries.
Other Traditions and Ritual Defilement
No major religious tradition supports attacking outsiders with human waste. In Christianity and Islam, ritual purity involves rules about personal hygiene and sanctuary, but not using excrement as a weapon. Some medieval Christian narratives and folklore did, however, depict Jews as filthy or impure, employing scatological imagery as defamation (not prescription). For example, the medieval Judensau iconography caricatured Jews sucking on a pig – the “Jew-pig” – and even feeding on its excrement【42†L70-L78】. One councilman’s carving shows Jews lifting a sow’s tail while another feeds on pig dung, with the Devil aiding the humiliation【42†L70-L78】. Martin Luther (a key Reformation figure) used similar imagery in his antisemitic polemics. In On the Jews and Their Lies (1543) he wrote that Jews were “full of the devil’s feces, which they wallow in like swine”【40†L43-L50】. These metaphorical curses cast Jews as abject and profane, but they are hateful insults, not theological instructions. (No Christian liturgy or popular practice ever called for physically dousing non-Christians in filth.)
Nor have Islamic sources prescribed such acts. While fringe Islamist propaganda might cite distorted Jewish texts, mainstream Islamic law and ritual purity speak only of ablutions and personal cleanliness, without any ritual use of waste. In summary, outside hostile caricature there is no sacrament or scriptural support in Christianity, Islam, or other faiths for contaminating outsiders with excrement. Any appearance of this motif in premodern texts is metaphorical (e.g. equating heresy with filth) and never advocates real “feces dousing.”
Historical and Folkloric Incidents
Historically, the act of throwing filth has been used as a generic form of humiliation or siege warfare, but not as an organized religious rite. In medieval warfare, for example, attackers sometimes catapulted dung or corpses into besieged fortresses to spread disease – a practical (if gross) tactic【68†L133-L142】. But these were military measures against enemy forces, not religion‑based ceremonies, and they were used by all sides (Crusaders, Ottomans, Mongols, etc.) when it suited strategic aims, not as a punishment of a particular faith.
