Datacenter Dangers #43 – Montgomery County Maryland – Test-Case for How Citizenry get Cheated out of Electricity as Regulated Public Service Utility

Back in the early 2000s, Catholic lawmakers helped break apart what PEPCO — the Potomac Electric Power Company — had been for decades: a regulated public-service utility.

Today I checked https://mdelectricchoice.com, Maryland’s official electric-choice portal: For 20878 — Kentlands in Gaithersburg — it lists zero alternative electric suppliers.

Zero.

That is not a marketplace. That is a corpse. A joke. Another total mockery of Montgomery County’s vaunted concentration of advanced-degree holders. So much for “smarty-pants.” A county full of credentialed gullibles got tricked again under guise of reform.

For decades, Marylanders were sold “electric choice” by a bloc of Catholic lawmakers and diabolical deregulation apostles who broke the old PEPCO public-utility bargain: one regulated utility, one accountable bill, one public-service obligation.

They split generation from delivery. Kept the wires monopoly. Added middlemen. Called confusion “choice.” Now the choice portal offers no choice. The citizen gets PEPCO delivery charges, auctioned supply, regulatory fog, and a dead shopping site. The politicians promised competition but instead delivered a shell game with no shells.

Every statement is sourced by scientific studies, published anecdotes, harmed victims.
Learn from others’ mistakes, or suffer similarly.

For a PEPCO Maryland customer, the electric bill has two big parts:

  1. Supply / generation
    • The actual electricity commodity.
    • If you do nothing, you usually get Standard Offer Service (SOS) supply.
    • SOS is procured through regulated wholesale auctions/processes, then passed through to customers.
    • If you choose a third-party supplier, that supplier sets the supply price under its contract/rules.
  2. Delivery / distribution
    • Pepco’s wires, poles, transformers, meters, billing/customer systems, local grid maintenance, etc.
    • You pay this to Pepco no matter who supplies the electricity.
    • These delivery rates are set in PSC-approved tariffs.
    • Pepco cannot simply charge whatever it wants for delivery; it must file rate cases/tariffs with the Maryland Public Service Commission.

The punchline gets worse.

The official site itself explains why the “choice” disappeared. Maryland’s Senate Bill 1 of 2024 imposed new consumer-protection rules on retail electric suppliers: price caps tied to the utility’s trailing 12-month Standard Offer Service rate, 12-month contract limits, stricter licensing, salesperson training, green-power price caps, company license renewals, and a “Do Not Transfer” list.

Then came the real market-killer: the end of purchase of receivables. Starting January 1, 2025, residential suppliers can no longer sell their customer receivables to the utility. In plain English: PEPCO no longer acts as the convenient collection pipeline for third-party suppliers. Until a new billing system exists, suppliers must bill customers separately.

So the suppliers left.

That is mdelectricchoice.com’s own sanitized explanation: the state finally added guardrails to a predatory fake-market, and the “market” vanished.

For 20878, in PEPCO territory, the portal lists zero alternative electric suppliers.

Not expensive choices. Not bad choices. No choices.

Which exposes the whole scam retroactively. If the only way “electric choice” functioned was by letting suppliers ride PEPCO’s billing system, dodge accountability, market teaser rates, and operate without hard price discipline, then it was never a real market. It was a parasite layer.

Maryland broke the old public-service utility model, promised competition, created confusion, tolerated years of supplier games, then finally tightened the rules — and the “competitors” disappeared.

So now the citizen gets the worst possible hybrid:

PEPCO still owns the wires. PEPCO still delivers the power. PEPCO still sends the unavoidable bill.
The state still maintains the theater of “choice.” But the choice portal offers nothing.

The deregulators did not create a market. They created a black-hole.

And meanwhile, the electric bill climbs into the obscene. Delivery fees, supply fees, maintenance fees, taxes, riders, surcharges — every line item breeding another line item. For less than half the electricity usage, our bill has effectively doubled in two years.

This is what government weaponized against citizens looks like: religious agenda, economic agenda, ideological stupidity, bureaucratic fog — pick a poison. At every turn, the household pays.

And now, right on schedule, come the bottomless energy-gorging Datacenters. Perfect timing. No doubt yet another Totalle “who could have imagined” CoinciDUNCE.

Understand that this ends only when citizens vote out the architects, drag every local lawmaker’s votes into constant scrutiny, and force electricity back where it belongs: A regulated public utility, accountable monopoly, public-service obligation. Not “choice.” Not middlemen. Not a corpse with a website.
